XXX OG (Hybrid)
While most people might see those three X’s and think of pornography, they make me think of moonshine.

Until recently, growing marijuana was as much an outlaw pursuit as moonshining had been. Thankfully those days are over, and now we celebrate them by smoking the best herb scientifically available, like this strain of XXX OG from Maven Genetics. It really is a blessed era that we live in.

Appearance: 5/5
This strain caught my eye because it sparkled like a chandelier. The leafy, forest green plant pods are all covered with bright, shiny crystals. A few dark orange tendrils thread themselves along the surface, but they mostly disappear in between the green leaves. The crystals are the real show, and they make this flower look great.

Aroma: 3/5
With a plant that had such a knockout look, I guess it wasn’t surprising that I was disappointed by the aroma. It’s a tough act to follow.

But I was really disappointed by how this flower had almost a complete lack of scent. What I did smell when I put my nose close was a dry, dusty smell. Maybe those crystals were keeping it all in. I wasn’t sure, but I must admit it was a bit deflating.

Taste: 4/5
Thankfully, my opinion started to bounce back once I started to smoke this strain. The smoke tasted very smooth, with a big burst of flavor up front, along with a relatively invisible exhale. It was light and easy to puff on, and I enjoyed the lack of harsh heat. This moonshine didn’t kick me in the teeth with its taste, but hopefully it would still deliver “the goods.”

Effect: 5/5
One of the things that I love most about this Hybrid strain is that the sensation hit me immediately after my first puff. I was feeling soothing body vibes right away, relaxing me into a state of total bliss. As I kept puffing away, the Indica symptoms started to creep in -- a slight head buzz, that feeling of being totally focused but also easily distracted. The Hybrid mixed the effects together nicely, making them a perfect pairing that created an all-over, all-purpose high suitable for any occasion.

I can happily report that this XXX OG proudly carries on the moonshine tradition. It’s a handmade Hybrid, created with care, and designed to deliver well-balanced bliss. And it’s super strong. One bowl took me a long way, and I urge you to exercise caution while smoking this strain.

Good luck to you, Chronic Smoker, as we embark upon our journey into the future together. Just remember that quality is worth paying for, and sometimes it’s cool to follow the rules. And if you can’t sell that to yourself, just remember that if we all try to be good, then good things can actually happen. That’s all I got. Cheers.

Hello, Chronic Smoker.

Good to see you again. We don’t have much time together -- you can only puff, puff, pass for so long -- so I’d like to take this moment to talk about what it means to be a marijuana smoker in 2019.

Next year is 2020, and that means the future is pretty much here. We’ve got wireless communication, streaming services, self-driving cars, a satirical government, and legalized marijuana (in the majority of the country). But just because we’re finally here doesn’t mean that we can forget how we got here, or what we need to do to earn these privileges that past generations worked so hard for. If we truly want to enjoy legalized, scientifically engineered marijuana then we need to be conscientious about how we use it going forward.

What does that mean exactly? That means, dear Chronic Smoker, becoming a “Conscientious Consumer.” And that means respecting the laws (no open use, no driving under the influence, etc.) to set an example for the young people. It also means having more awareness of where your bud comes from and how you get it.

It means not going to illegal shops. They might be cheaper and not charge all those stupid taxes, but they devalue the recreational market everytime someone buys weed from them because it proves critics who fought against regulation right. These drugs are not just for fun, they’re also valuable medicine. And they should not only should be regulated as such, but respected in the same way, as well.

When you buy flower from a shop that doesn’t have its proper permit, you are basically saying that those regulations don’t matter. And they do matter. Medical marijuana and its effects are the quickest, strongest route to mainstream acceptability, and we need to push that forward rather than undercutting it by trying to save a few bucks.

We also need to adjust our attitudes towards it. Most of us grew up during the Great Plant Prohibition, and we might still treat it like an illicit substance that should be shamed, hidden away, or kept unspoken for fear of reprisal. But that’s the exact opposite attitude we need to have about marijuana.

If we can treat it like it’s no big deal -- a little smoke here or there, just like a glass of wine with dinner -- then it won’t have that big, forbidden fruit appeal to kids. And then we can actually have the informed conversation about its benefits, rather than its consequences.

Some Moms drink beer, some smoke weed. Big deal. Your Grandmother uses it to help her arthritis. So what? At least it’s not pain pills.

One last thing you can do, Chronic Smoker, is shop at MMD Hollywood, or other dispensaries like it. They’re legal, and a fantastic alternative to the antiseptic corporate feel of MedMen. It’s slick but homey, and it’s full of employees who are real people - not retail automatons. And they have a lot of great flower, which is the ultimate reason to shop there. Because we both know that if you don’t have that, you’ve got no business being in the weed business whatsoever.
