Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to Light Club. We match two pre-rolled joints against each other in a head-to-head smokedown.

Both will be lit. Only one will win.

We must admit that it was a (really) long time after we started smoking marijuana before we took an interest in how it is created. We assumed that, like karma or electricity, it was the product of some complicated-but-actually-simple magic mastered and practiced by only the most powerful cosmic rulers of the galaxy. But over the years, some patient and knowledgebale budtenders have filled us in on the finer aspects of the growth cycle. That was never more apparent than after our visit to Medgo (3438 W 8th St, Los Angeles, CA 90005), where we decided to take their two rival pre-roll selections and throw them into the “Smoke-tagon” to see which one would be crowned the champion.

Two types of pre-rolls were available for our choosing — several strains of indoor bud, and a few packed with sungrown plant. We were unaware of the difference, so our budtender brought us up to speed.

In this case, it’s all about where the plant is actually grown. Indoor strains are — you guessed it — grown indoors, under heat lamps. This is what you see when most TV shows or movies portray some grand underground grow operation (i.e. Weeds, Pineapple Express, etc.). It’s our understanding that plants grown indoors are easier to maintain due to the regulation of water and light. It’s apparently easier and more cost-effective for young farmers to do this.

Sungrown plants are grown via sunlight, either outdoors or inside of a greenhouse. Here, the sun is the primary light source for the plant. We learned how to tell the difference, too. In order to do this, just look at the bud, itself. Plants with a rich green colors are often grown indoors, while sungrown plants usually carry a darker shade.

We selected one of each type: Cookie Glue for our indoor pick, and Skywalker to represent the sungrown flowers. Let’s spotlight these condenters a bit, shall we?

This pre-roll is beautifully packed and surprisingly short. The truncated tip caught fire immediately, and the drag was even. There was more glue than cookie to this taste. The acrid smoke from this strain was sour and very strong. That powerful taste must be a side effect from the powerful punch, because we were feeling the effects almost immediately.

We got a strong high off this Hybrid joint, that’s for sure. It definitely leaned towards the Indica side of things, and it came equipped with a powerful sense of focus. We felt perky and alert, with a pep in our step that typically comes from Sativa highs. The balance worked well for us, and the plant was so strong that we were wishing we could press pause on our burning joint. Full disclosure — we did wind up smoking this guy over two sessions. Don’t blame us. This joint is just super strong!

This was a wonderful smoke. It was flavorful and strong, getting us high right away and keeping us there for quite a while. Don’t be disappointed by its small stature — this sucker is an atom bomb and totally blows away all the bigger competition. If we had the chance to buy another one of these joints or try something else, we’d stick with these cookies every single time.

Skywalker (Sativa)

Our sungrown selection comes in at nearly double the size of its opponent. Now, everybody knows that size doesn’t matter, but we’d be lying if we said it didn’t get us excited. Despite the size, the joint seemed firmly packed and didn’t have any lumps or loose areas.

We lit the tip and got a mostly even burn, as we started in on the cone. To contrast our indoor candidate, we could taste a definite difference in the sungrown flower. It had a dry, crisp flavor. The aroma of the smoke was earthy and slightly sweet. It felt weathered, or possibly sun baked, compared to the distilled purity of the indoor, lamplight plant.

This Sativa worked its magic slowly. It started to sooth us, but we didn’t even know it. After a few puffs on this, we were feeling a subtle, yet robust high. Our whole being was not just relaxed, but satisfied. Like how you feel after a good meal. This high didn’t overwhelm us or demand our total attention. It was just there to comfort us, like a warm blanket, or a cat sleeping in your lap.

The Force was definitely strong with this Skywalker. Sorry, we couldn’t resist. This sungrown crop elicited a very groovy feeling that we simply adored. It was the ideal Sativa sensation — a strong presence of effects, without making you feel intoxicated. This pre-roll would be perfect for some “Me Time” after a long day, sinking into a hot bath, or for any smoker that deals with any sort of chronic pain.

And the winner is…

Skywalker

It’s not that the Cookie Glue wasn’t good, it’s just that the vibes we got from Skywalker were far more enjoyable.

Goliath might have beaten David in this round, but either one of these strains would be a solid purchase. It just depends on what you’re looking for.
